Passing of former IITD President Dolores Carr-Wicks

Dolores Carr-Wicks, Past President IITD and IFTDO from Letterkenny, Co.Donegal

It is with great sadness that one of the great characters of IITD passed away on Friday, June 19th.

Dolores was a great personality and was forever omni present for a period of 10 years in the 1990s and early part of the present century.

She was the Marketing and Training Manager of UNIFI in Letterkenny where she met and married Ed Wicks who was a wonderful support to Dolores all of their married life. They were a match made in heaven.

Dolores established the North-West Chapter in the early 1990’s and quickly established a presence at a national level in the IITD. She was a very active member of the national Council and was very focused and determined in any goal she decided needed to be followed in the best interests of the IITD. She didn’t suffer fools or people who did not subscribe to the vision for the future.

Such was her standing in the organisation, that she became Vice-President in 1994 and moved into the President position from 1995 to 1996. During this time, she overhauled some of the structures and strategies of the organisation and established a baseline for the organisation to develop over the next 10 years.

After her term as President was completed in 1996, she headed up the organisation committee to run the 1998 international conference which was held in Trinity College. In this role she became the President of the International Federation of Training and Development Organisations (IFTDO). Due to the work of Dolores and her team, the conference was very successful with 1,000 attendees who came from a wide variety of countries. As with her activities in IITD, Dolores was also a very active member of IFTDO and led many changes and initiatives during her period on the IFTDO Council.

Dolores remained in UNIFI in Letterkenny until it closed in July,2004. Initially Dolores and Ed went to Thailand where ED was appointed the General Manager of the UNIFI subsidiary there. After about five years, they both went to live in China where a new UNIFI plant had been established. They remained there until retirement. Dolores as usual, when in Thailand, led an initiative where against a great deal of local officialdom, managed to fundraise and build a small village in Thailand where many local families were given housing that they could not normally afford.

Nothing could change the direction of Dolores when she formed a vision and made her mind up in terms of implementing the vision. That would always be my memory of her. I was lucky to know her and be influenced by her wisdom and determination. She will be missed.

We wish to express condolences to her husband Ed who was a wonderful partner, husband and friend. He was a strong silent support of Dolores all through her life. They were a wonderful couple.
